The project in question was a group project for the AR5321 Advanced Architectural Technology module. The objective of the exercise was to select one particular facade system and develop it further to produce two separate systems (System A & B) for an existing office development in the prime area of Ho Chi Minh City. The design facade systems considers solar screening, internal visibility, material technology, support systems and operability.

As a group, we chose to conceptualise the two schemes base on an operable skin system that is able to morph and adapt to the occupants’ needs and environmental comfort. We explored the use of fabric for its elasticity and translucency – an unconventional material for a building facade but made suitable for the local context, climate and solar orientation.

The featured facade system is System B: The Comb – as the name suggests, the vertical members resemble combs that can be moved to alter the angles of the horizontal elements, changing the porosity the building facade.

Featured animation/renderings, drawings and diagrams were produced by Mars Kueh.
