The project brief focuses on the concepts of structure and joinery in architecture, leading to material organisation and spatial experiences, materialised on a 20m x 20m x 20m platonic cube formed by a grid of linear timber elements.

This project started with a case study analysis of the Swiss Sound Box by Peter Zumthor. The deduced five key components of the timber wall system were – stacking, tension (steel bracing), frictional resistance, density of timber weave) and modularity, which served as the structural precedence for the final design of this project.

The variations in stacking create a range of visual porosities, light intensities and public-private spaces. The angles of each steel member vary according to different heights of the human-eye level and framed views of sceneries.

The layout of the spaces are site-oriented, where enclosures created by stacked members are placed according to views of the seascape.

The structural system of the final design comprises of stacked i-sections and steel tension bracing, which stabilises each component, allowing for the wall-to-roof transformation.
